Beware of Whistle Noise February 1, 2008 Tech Guy (Boston, MA) I bought this mainly on impulse because of the price at Amazon. The item arrived with all parts intact. Step by step instructions were clear and accurate with photographs. Installation should be straight forward for most. There is a slight noticeable improvement in torque and acceleration above the 3000 rpm range, although it could be just my imagination due to the better sounding growl. I do not hear a difference in sound below 3000 rpm. I do experience a high pitch whistle that can be heard over my radio. The whistle is not constant and occurs only during slight throttle mostly in the 2000-2500 rpm range. Others on the internet also have reported this whistle noise from a conical filter from K&N and other manufacturers on BMWs and other makes. The noise can be irritating given its high frequency. Unlike the whining sound of a supercharger, which screams more of performance, the whistle noise sounds more like there's a tea kettle under your hood. Others have chosen to live with this whistle, a few actually enjoyed it and others have chosen to go back to stock. Youll have to determine for yourself if it's worth putting up with the whistle for a few extra ponies. Upon further investigation, the whistle is not caused by the filter itself, but by the air going through the throttle plate at around 2300 rpm. This can be confirmed by removing the cone filter. The whistle is still present and can be localized to the throttle body section. Apparently, this is an issue with the E46 regardless of maker of the CAI.
Definately makes a difference December 28, 2007 Bill Nemzek (The Woodlands, TX) The quality of the kit was excellent as were the instructions that included quite a few pictures and details. The air filter adds just a little bit more of a growl to the engine that is noticable only at low RPM and high load during acceleration. The engine also has a little bit more of a pop when you get on the throttle that is definately noticable.
Great performance intake December 18, 2007 Luis C. Breziner (Wayne, PA) Unbelievable price! the kit was new and was sooo easy to install. Very recommended seller, you cannot find this anywhere for this price.
Nice Performance Addition to my 2004 BMW 325i November 3, 2007 M. S. Arledge (Union City, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've used K&N products in the past so I was assured of quality. Assembly instructions were excellent as well as online research on K&N's web site. After installation I can notice a slight amount of power increase and trottle response is quicker - just what I hoped! Also Amazon had the lowest price when you figure no tax or shipping fees.
