Impressed with waterproof qualities September 1, 2010 kk31139 I bought this bag for a two week trip when I needed extra room for camping equipment. I own a 2009 CRV. This bag was a bit big for my car as it went over the roof rack rails in both the front and the back. In order to use, I had to shorten "roll" the front of the bag up to make it smaller. That being said, it still had a lot of room. I fit a tent and poles, 3 air mattresses, 3 sleeping bags and two bags full of towels and still had room.
It rained all of the first day and all night it poured on the bag. The next night when we finally got to camp, the two sleeping bags in the front were slightly damp. We set them in front of the fire for a few minutes and they were good. I believe that everything would have stayed much drier if I hadn't rolled the bag to shorten it as that allowed water to sit on top of the bag and only the things in front got damp.
worked great after adjustments... August 31, 2010 aaron walker This inexpensive bag holds a lot! we took it from Ohio to Myrtle Beach--1400 miles round trip. only problem was my fault--I loaded a lightweight pack-n-play in the front of the bag--perpendicular to the direction of the minivan (and the wind). I held my camera out the window to get an action shot (at around 70 mph). (I'll try to attach a picture to show the pack-n-play lifted by the wind (at 70 mph) and the wind damage to the front seam (again--my fault--bad cargo load distribution).
on the return trip I loaded a stuffed large suitcase in the very front which helped the bag "fill out" against the wind and no problems at all then.. no wind noise--it worked great. the straps feel cheep, but pulled tight and strong.
I would recommend this car top bag! it's a great value at under $50--esp. since we'll only need it once per year. when staying at a hotel, unload this bad and unstrap it to store it in your locked van overnight.
Great Bag, Completely Waterproof! August 30, 2010 C.B. This bag is great! We first used the bag on a six-hour road trip. It rained (heavily at times) the entire trip. I was sure that our items were going to be soaking wet by time we arrived. To our surprise the inside of the bag was completely dry, not a drop of rain made its way into the bag. In addition, the bag did not make for a noisy trip. Actually, we kept looking in our mirrors to make sure it was still there. Lastly, we were able to fit five big duffle bags inside of it and had plenty of room to spare. I did a lot of research and found that this bag is cheaper than a number of other bags out there that are not waterproof. This bag is a great value with out compromising on quality. I would highly recommend it.
Worked like a charm August 25, 2010 L. Garretson (Charlottesville, VA USA) We bought this cargo carrier for a 6 day family camping trip, and it worked perfectly for us. In a total of about 18 hours of driving, we had no mishaps. The construction of the carrier is very solid, the straps were secure, and, after driving through around a half hour of light rain close to our destination, our stuff was completely dry when we arrived.
Unlike some others, we had no problem with wind noise or straps vibrating - we just kept the sliding clip close to the end of the strap and it stayed put.
My one piece of advice about this product is to avoid overtightening the straps. With soft stuff on top, it would be very easy to get the straps extremely tight. But this sort of security is unnecessary, and could put more stress on the strap seams than they need to have. The carrier itself is made of a fabric that has a great deal of grip to the roof, and with the straps secure, even in extended drives at high speeds, this baby isn't going anywhere. After the experience or our outbound drive, I kept the straps just moderately tight, with a little bit of give, on the return, and experienced the same stability. I think this strategy will make for a longer life for the carrier and not compromise stability one bit.
Excellent for the money August 23, 2010 Liffeylulu I did a lot of research prior to purchasing this cargo bag. Just returned from a 1200 mile round trip vacation and I'm happy to report that this bag is very waterproof! Our return trip was 8 hours of heavy downpours and the contents were completely dry (didn't have to use plastic bags as some reviewers suggested). The bag holds a large amount - didn't notice any noise or drag while driving. Did have some difficulties installing the bag - I have a large mini van with factory installed roof rack - had to remove the clips from the straps in order to fit under and around the side rails - more of a time-consuming issue. Needed a ladder to reach the rear straps - easier with two people. Overall I would recommend the product - excellent quality and you can't beat the price!
