4 out of 5 stars There is heart here   December 3, 2008
Donna M. (CA, USA)
Kev loved Winnifred(Win) from the first moment he met her, when he was fighting to live, after his gypsy tribe had left him, beaten, for dead. She soothed his soul, and soon helped nurse him back to health. Win's family greeted him with open arms, and once well they offered to let him stay with them, if he wanted to. And so Kev stayed, but only because he wanted to stay close to Win. He knew he could never have her, for she deserved so much more, and he viewed himself as a monster. But he couldn't be away from her either for she was his soul. Instead, he consoled himself by watching over her, and protecting her.

Soon after that, Win fell ill with the scarlet fever. Kev watched over her. But as her condition continued to worsen, and in a moment of utter desperation, he concocted a poison brew that was said to help fight this type of fever, but didn't have guaranteed results. He made a lot more than was necessary, and kept a full cup for himself. If she died, he would die with her. But Win didn't die, she survived, but she was always weak after that. She couldn't walk for long distances, she needed assistance with going up and down the stairs, etc... But Kev was there, helping her, protecting her, and secretly loving her.

Now I admit that a few times Kev frustrated me, he did over brood. But for the most part, I understood his motives and understood his behavior in rejecting Win's advances, even after she returned apparently well and completely healed, from the clinic. Kev was afraid that he might inadvertently hurt her. I loved the relationship between Kev and Win. I liked that Win decided to move on with her life, when Kev rejected her, she showed courage and intelligence. Both are very likable h/h.

On the other hand, I wanted to see a wedding scene between Kev and Win. I mean we got to see their betrothal celebration (gypsy style), but I wanted to see the church wedding scene that was implied by the author but not shown. In addition, I didn't understand why Kev wasn't even interested in knowing who his family from his father's side is, when his Romany uncle (mother's side) had treated him so badly. It was Cam who was constantly looking into it, and trying to find the connection between himself and Kev, and who their father is.

Also, I would have preferred it, if the intimate scene between h/h had been toned down. And I didn't like that Kev didn't stay celibate, when Win left for the doctor's clinic in France to get treated. I know there was nothing between them at that point of the story, but he loved Win, so it didn't sit well with me. Also the story tended to be slow at times.

But in the end, it is the emotion, the depth of love the reader feels between Kev and Win that saves this book from being just another average read. Indeed there is heart here, and that is what brings this book up to a solid "4" stars.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE LISA KLEYPAS   November 26, 2008

I am a huge fan of Lisa Kleypas. I have read EVERY book she has written. She is an exceptional writer that takes the reader on a journey that is unforgettable. This book is no exception, and in my opinion its one of her best. Kev and Win were always destined to be together and the journey Ms. Kleypas carried them on was heart-stoppingly beautiful. This book was passionate and emotional. The tormented longing that Kev felt for Win and the yearning and love she felt for him was written with such poignancy and emotional depth that it made my heart ache with tears. Even though I have finished reading this book, the emotional remnants are still with me. It was a beautifully written romantic story that will endear Lisa kleypas to me, always.

3 out of 5 stars Sunrise Could Have Used A Noon Wake-Up   November 19, 2008

I love Lisa Kleypas and her writing style but every once in awhile she puts out a clunker and lets hope this one is it for a long, long time.

This was a story I wanted to love and started to really like but it sort of fell flat towards the middle. Truthfully there were times I laughed my behind off with the dialogue she crafted for Leo and Ms. Marks and look forward to (hopefully) reading their story in the future. And (and this is a huge AND) I commend Ms. Kleypas for tackling diverse characters but I feel in SMAS and Mine til' Midnight that her male heros were a bit diminished. I was greatly disappointed she choose to introduce their white Irish heritage in such a forceful way at the very end. It was almost as if she did not have confidence that a diverse character could be legitimized as a hero and also prove to be industrious, wealthy, loving and all of the other things we assume when we read about white-anglo heroes in romance novels. Constantly referring to Cam's heartfelt desire to lose his wealth reminded me of Lucy Ricardo in the I Love Lucy episode where Ricky forbids her from going to the casino in Monaco. She does anyway and when she find a chip on the floor she tosses it on the blackjack table, she keeps winning. Well if you know that episode and remember the silliness and buffoonery that occurs, that is sort of the way I felt she worked to portray Cam.

As for Kev and Win. I loved the idea of two people so oppositionally different waiting for each other to love, live and eventually ride off into the sunset. But come on people, can't we all just get along! The repeated yo-yoing of Win to Kev made me wonder if Ms. Kleypas herself got bored writing their story and substituted silliness for substance. His over-brooding, almost feral behavior made me at times wish Dr. Harrow had minored in psychology and would commit to some therapy sessions with Kev.

I am in no way put off by this effort from Ms. Kleypas. In fact I hope she puts out another such book, maybe ushering in a Spanish hero (wink, wink). My advice is to be fearless, it is what we fans have come to expect of you.

5 out of 5 stars I Love the Hathaway Family - book 2 of the series   November 17, 2008

The Hathaway family is so entertaining and it's so interesting to watch them grow and change. This is the story of Win and Merripen who have loved each other forever but due to Win's health they never acted on those feelings. In this book the author gives you some history of how Win and Merripen have developed into the current characters. Win returns home with one goal to live life and Kev Merripen is at the top of her list. Great novel, I love the Gypsy storyline and the characters from The Wallflower Series making a cameo.

I would also suggest; Mine Till Midnight (The Hathaways, Book 1) ,
Secrets of a Summer Night (The Wallflowers, Book 1), It Happened One Autumn (The Wallflowers, Book 2), The Devil in Winter (The Wallflowers, Book 3),Scandal in Spring (The Wallflowers, Book 4), A Wallflower Christmas

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book   November 17, 2008

I like the book vey much-the plot, the character and the tension of the story. I wished they'd been married a little sooner and most of the book about more tension as man and wife, just like the other books. Anyway, I was cut short on the story about Leo and Miss Marks. It just faded towards the end of the book, and you wonder what happened there( AND I WAS FOLLOWING THAT PART!) If Miss Kleypas will be able to read this review, I would like to ask you to consider writing about Leo and Miss Marks in your future books. Leo was far the most sarcastic and insulting (LOL) among your heros so far but I think it would present a great love story... It reminds me quite of your book A devil in Winter. But this one would presebt a different challenge.
