Product Description

Amelia Willoughby has been engaged to the Duke of Wyndham for as long as she can remember. Literally. A mere six months old when the contracts were signed, she has spent the rest of her life waiting. And waiting. And waiting . . . for Thomas Cavendish, the oh-so-lofty duke, to finally get around to marrying her. But as she watches him from afar, she has a sneaking suspicion that he never thinks about her at all . . .

It's true. He doesn't. Thomas rather likes having a fiancee—all the better to keep the husband-hunters at bay—and he does intend to marry her . . . eventually. But just when he begins to realize that his bride might be something more than convenient, Thomas's world is rocked by the arrival of his long-lost cousin, who may or may not be the true Duke of Wyndham. And if Thomas is not the duke, then he's not engaged to Amelia. Which is the cruelest joke of all, because this arrogant and illustrious duke has made the mistake of falling in love . . . with his own fiancee!

3 out of 5 stars Not Good   December 1, 2008

I used to love Julia Quinn, but this book is one fat disappointment. In two words: boring and annoying. Mrs.Quinn is good with words, no doubt about it, but there are just two many of them in this story...with no sense behind. After finishing a half of the book, I asked myself: Well, what's happened? NOTHING, was my sincere answer to myself. Characters are walking and talking and all you want is to yell: Come on guys, do some! You can skip a dozen of pages and won't miss anything... Nah, that's not how I like my love story

2 out of 5 stars Same story as the last book   December 1, 2008

I have really enjoyed Julia Quinn's books. However, this last one was basically the book prior with little difference. I was really expecting this story to take place after the character lost his title and how he won the girl but it just recanted the same story with different view points. Very disappointing. However, lovely cover picture! I know a man who looks just like the one on the cover! Beautiful.

2 out of 5 stars Chemistry, anyone?   November 23, 2008

Unlike others, I have no problem with reading a book that's basically the same story as another, but from the point of view of another character. In fact, when I read the 1st "Duke of Wyndham" book, I wondered what things would seem like from Thomas' point of view. The problem here, is that there is absolutely no chemistry between Thomas & Amelia, his fiancee of 20 years. There is also so little interaction, it's hard to understand how they are suddenly in love after a relationship of indifference on his part and irritation on hers. The development of their relationship, which should have been considerably more complex and interesting, is what the book should have been about. Instead, we just get a rehash of events we already know, and Thomas' thoughts (ad nauseum) on the obvious effect on his life of losing the dukedom. Julia Quinn has long been a favorite author of mine, but this seems to be a singularly lazy effort on her part.

2 out of 5 stars Substandard at best   November 21, 2008

Lifeless characterizations of both the Duke and Amelia; parallel plotline with earlier book was confusing, offputting and poorly done. Not worthy of the cost of publishing and production, let alone purchase. Ms. Quinn is capitalizing on the loyalty of her sphere of readers to pass off this badly executed work. I will be much more hesitant to purchase the next one of her titles.

2 out of 5 stars Same wine, new skin   November 20, 2008

Whatever made Julia Quinn think that readers would like to read the same story twice over? 80% of the book is devoted to the same story from the first book, seen from Thomas's point of view this time.

And the sad part is, the little interaction that Ms Quinn lets us see between Amelia and Thomas is so beautifully done, I feel she wasted this romance on an experiment.
