5 out of 5 stars Excellent starter kit   December 29, 2007

This is an excellent starter kit for families to begin preparing for emergencies. I especially like that it has an activity book for kids with crayons, as children are often forgotten in emergency situations. The separate first aid compartment makes accessing things in a hurry ideal.

5 out of 5 stars High quality and they pack a lot of stuff in a small package   June 26, 2007

I bought one of these for myself and ended up buying one for almost every member of my family. I was a little suspicious of the quality of something from Target but it seems the Red Cross made sure they did it right. There are four of almost everything and batteries are included for the flashlights and the radio. Unfortunately the radio is a piece of crap so I would advise you test it before you put this away for a rainy day. Better yet, get yourself a decent one. Freeplay Energy makes very nice wind-up-powered radios and flashlights.

Speaking of rain, the only other area where they seemed to skimp a bit was on the rain ponchos (four of them) which are very VERY thin. But the first aid kit is well-appointed and the materials are well made. Everybody should have one of these in their home, car, boat, etc.

I would advise you to also acquire some emergency rations and water (both with a long shelf life) for your emergency collection because there's nothing to eat or drink in this kit. You might want to look into Aqua Blox - water boxes with a 5-year shelf life and some of those Coast Guard-approved emergency rations. Some regular canned food (or dehydrated food) are also good for tough times. Water is the most important, of course, so always fill up every available container (and your bathtub) with fresh water at the first sign of trouble. I could go on and on but I'll stop here!
